I recently learned that the wonderful papercrafting store Kept Creations in Whitman, MA., will be closing in September. It's the latest in a long line of locally owned independent art stores in Massachusetts and throughout New England that have fallen on tough times. Kept Creations only opened 5 years ago in 2012 by store owner Kim Parkinson and her husband, Patrick. Specializing in mixed media, altered art, rubber stamping, scrapbooking and all other paper crafts, Kept Creations even had it's own cable access TV show!
Brick and mortar stores face the difficult challenges of competing against mass retailers online and big box stores all offering lower prices. In this economy, we all want to shop smart and save $$$ where we can. But, if we don't shop small and support local business too, this is the sad result.
So, if you're lucky enough to have a craft store near you
